The Twelve Swords of Power were a series of Swords created by Vulcan as part of a divine game set in motion by the gods of the Books of Swords universe. The Swords were scattered throughout the world in order to pit the nations of the world against one another and amuse the gods.
History[]
Forged in the mountains near Treefall, the Swords were created by Vulcan and cooled in the blood of his assistants (including Jord, who was to be the only survivor) and given to Hermes. Hermes distributed the Swords among the mortal population as part of the first stage of the gods' grand game. Over the years that followed, the Swords changed hands time and again, their comings and goings dictating the course of world events on numerous occasions. Few mortals wielded even one, though Jord's son Mark had personal experience with most of them.
The gods quickly realized that the Swords were far too dangerous to leave in mortal hands, so they dispatched Hermes to collect them. Hermes, however, was slain by Baron Doon with Farslayer before he'd had a chance to do so. This proved to be the beginning of the end for the gods, as it was humanity's belief that sustained them and gave them power. With Hermes' death, that belief wavered, until the gods eventually faded away completely (with the exception of Draffut, whose origins differed from the others').
Despite the gods' demise, the Swords' power remained, and they continued to be a major force in the history of humanity (though most were ultimately destroyed by Shieldbreaker).
